Some thoughts on Hinduism-1

Posted in : Hinduism

(added few months ago!)

Actually, any one (or more than one) of a million traditions. And there is more to it than that.  But this is the simplest way to describe it. To become a Hindu, simply start living by the precepts (of the tradition that you are drawn to). To learn these, you will need to find a teacher (guru).  This could be anyone (guru simply means someone who is well-grounded), and place yourself in his/her hands.

Hinduism Should Reclaim The Upanishad- Power of Sitting says His Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda

Posted in : Hinduism

(added few months ago!)

Paramahamsa Nithyananda expressed his deep concern at how humanity has reached a state where it has become hard for someone to just sit with themselves and do nothing. With the growing technology and materialism invading the minds and lifestyle of humanity, sitting with oneself without doing anything, has become a rare phenomena. He said, "Humanity has lost its trust on the power of sitting, in Upanishad which is the basic truth of Vedic science. The very idea of simply sitting is lost. People worry that if they sit with themselves they may fall into depression, or miss out on something which others are doing, which keeps them constantly engaged in activities that is not even necessary for their spiritual growth."

In his live streaming message to the thousands of followers worldwide, Paramahamsa Nithyananda said, "Sit, sit, sit. Sit your way to enlightenment. That is why Upanishad has become a brand to Hindu tradition. Upanishad means simply sitting with the master, if you sit in pure aloneness, you are sitting with the Master. No prayer, no meditation, no mantra, no un clutching, nothing. Don't even try un-clutching, just sit. Just as how a baby grows when a pregnant woman sleeps, same way the consciousness grows when initiated disciples just sit with themselves in aloneness. "

Paramahamsa Nithyananda said that the greatness of the Power of Sitting is evident from the importance given to it in the Vedic Tradition. He said, "In Hindu tradition the highest practice is sitting, the highest teaching is Upanishad- sitting with the Master, the highest seat and the place of sitting is called peeta. Buddhism is able to create more and more enlightened beings just because they held on to one truth, Zazen (seated meditation)." He added, "I really wanted Hinduism to get back to that powerful truth of Upanishad. The first word, one would hear even if they wanted to jump start learning Hinduism is learning Upanishad, because Upanishad is the first word, the essence of Vedas." He said, he was pained to see how main stream Hinduism has lost these basic truths which has only resulted in a great damage being done to our Vedic tradition and lifestyle. This happens to be the root cause of many of the lifestyle related diseases which is pervading the lives of global communities worldwide.

Paramahamsa Nithyananda envisions that in next couple of years at least 100,000 youth will be inspired to live, experience and spread the Vedic science of enlightenment. He expressed that the only hope for Hinduism and spiritual tradition in India is when millions of youngsters study these great spiritual truths as part of their academic curriculum. He said, "One of the most unfortunate thing is, even leaders neither talk about Upanishad nor practice it. They don't even have confidence that Upanishad is possible in their lives. We need large number of Universities, spirituality teaching organizations, seminaries, theological societies. Everybody bothers about the economical, political, social corruption. No one bothers about the conscious corruption which has happened to the Vedic civilization."

It is necessary for a society to be established in simple basic truths of the Vedic science. It is then that an incarnation can spend time in only sharing the higher Vedic sciences such as materialization, teleportation and ways to express extraordinary yogic powers such as awakening a person's kundalini energy. This will lead to a new generation, a new civilization of peaceful enlightened beings living the rich and graceful culture of enlightenment that is necessary to protect and save the future of planet earth.

What Your Guru is Not Telling You About Karma

Posted in : Mysticism

(added few months ago!)

We define karma as everything you say, do, or intend coming back to you in equal measure, mostly from past lives. What you do now will likely come back to you in a future life, not in your immediate future. Everyone has endured a negative experience relating to career, relationships, family, friendships and, or other parts of their life. But that does not always reflect payback for having done something negative in the past.

For example, a relationship based on no promises ends. She wanted it to last forever, even though it was over almost at the beginning. She knew this, yet she wasn't honest with herself. He believed they ended on good terms, since neither did anything wrong, it just naturally fell apart. If it's over, it's over, and mature adults acknowledge this and get on with their lives. Therefore, her expectations, not karma, caused her misery. Unfortunately, she claims to be heartbroken and tells others that he "hurt" her, even though he didn't (which makes her incur negative karma).

Unfulfilled Desires Aren't Always Bad Karma

Is this circumstance, is her deep disappointment the result of her negative actions in a past life? In our view, not necessarily. Her immaturity may be karmic, but her refusing to be an adult now and admit the reality of the connection to herself isn't the result of her dumping someone in this life or a past life. Him not wanting to stay with her "forever" may be, however, but sooner or later, if she was honest with herself, she also would have realized it wasn't meant to be long-term.

Trying to make a relationship work that is not meant to be, for example, is working against your destined path, so you could say it relates to your past lives, but it's only sometimes a direct result of burning that same individual, or someone else, romantically in a past life.

Authentic Bad Relationship Karma

In another example, person A falls for person B. Person B pretends to fall in love and makes promises they have no intention of keeping (this is key), knowing all along the promises will be broken soon after. Then person B inexplicably dumps person A, leaving person A heart-broken. How do you know A had it coming? You don't, unless you scrutinize their comprehensive astrological and numerological charts and, or they experience past life regression to find the root cause of their suffering from this experience.

In this case, considering that you discover person A had it coming through the above-mentioned methods, even though the one doing the dumping may possibly not incur negative karma for it (you read that right), the one who is heartbroken is balancing some negative karma because of treating person B and others in a similar way in a past life. Note, this doesn't give anyone a free pass for bad behavior.

It May be Collective Timing, Not Karmic Payback

The core structure of your life, formed through past life actions, directly reflects your current key life circumstances and events. But let's say you have a really tough time getting dates that you like, and the universe seems to be conspiring to push you into solitude. This does not automatically mean that you were a nasty lover in past lives, but that, for example, you are moving through some collective timing that is good for other things in your life right now, not your love life. It is not yet time for you to fall in love.

Lack of Self-Knowledge, Not Bad Karma

Not getting what you want doesn't always reflect "bad karma," particularly if you don't yet know yourself very well and your ego-self based plan for your life is not aligned with your optimum/natural path in life, the one you are meant to travel.

Sometimes there is direct karma to balance in not getting what you want, and sometimes not. It's unwise to always use the idea of karma as a scapegoat for life's disappointments. Besides, there is no room for blame and self-pity in a spiritually aware person's outlook, though even the most self-actualized individuals may temporarily regress, at times.

God’s Religions & Similarities Between Them

Posted in : Jainism

(added few months ago!)

Religions from God
God Almighty, revealed the religion to the entire mankind through his prophets who lived in different ages, in different parts of the world and in different societies, right from the period of creation of the first man Adam who is the first prophet until Muhammad who is the last prophet.

The existing religions such as Hinduism/Vedism, Zoroastrianism/Mazdayasni, Taoism, Judaism, Islam are the ones revealed by and originated from God who is one and only one. Jainism, Budhism and Christianity are not separate religions. When Jainism and Budhism are a part of Hinduism, Christianity is a part of Judaism. This is because Mahaveer, Gautama Buddha or Jesus were not sent by God to institute a new religion separate from the religions that had been revealed long before them and were in practice at their time ie Hinduism and Judaism. But God sent them to preach the morals, impart wisdom to peoples and to dispel man-made traditions that had gone against God-revealed religions.

Similarities Between God's Religions
As Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Taoism, Judaism and Islam had originated from one and the same source who is God Almighty, these religions are closely inter-related and have many common beliefs, rituals, worship, rules, laws, morals, and wisdom. The reason for the similarities is that God's law is universal and as such his religion is universal too. Some people think that the similarities between religions are due to one religion borrowing beliefs and philosophies from other religion(s) and vice versa. But they are mistaken and have failed to notice or hardened their hearts to refuse to believe that the author of these religions is one God and hence the similarities.

One Religion
Worship (Yajna/Yasna/Salat), other rituals, laws, morals, knowledge, wisdom and many other teachings found in Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Taoism, Judaism, and Islam are fundamentally same and corroborate each other. Hence these religions are like several branches in a tree and these form part of, and constitute basically ONE RELIGION of God Almighty.

Every year people of Islam always commemorate and carry out fasting ramadan, conceive how the funny when every finished to carry out fasting doesn't leave a trace at heart and doesn't bring benefit whatevers. Although really only limit of physical / just body but can cause not congenial, brutality's loss in our self, when our something that eat to come from wrong, even less by wrong.

Hold back thirsty hungry also can we make tool for taste's increase thank God us towards all kind of taste that already Allah has passed to us, example try to do ????? or hold back thirsty hungry taste during one successive weeks and feels the influence in physical we, when during the time we always consider to eat and drink that only usually just so so value very incredible, and make us aware how still their quantity poor not can to fulfil the need everyday, sometimes they eat only 3 times a day, 1 time one week, even only just eat absolutely. Well that way we fairer again in shall participate for our self and will can to separate out right for them poor. By right still many again value and wisdom, philosophies that can we take and we pick then we are consumption for alive and our lifes.

Filling in the Gaps

Posted in : Judaism

(added few months ago!)

"Waiting for Godot" follows two days in the lives of a pair of men who divert themselves while they wait expectantly and in vain for someone named Godot to arrive. They claim him as an acquaintance but in fact hardly know him, admitting that they would not recognize him were they to see him. To occupy themselves, they eat, sleep, converse, argue, sing, play games, exercise, swap hats, and contemplate suicide – anything "to hold the terrible silence at bay" (Wikipedia). As often happens, I find myself waiting in line. Although a few days early, I feel as if it is Succot; a word (and structure) often associated with waiting:

"So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth (Genesis 33:16-17)." Jacob was waiting to see what Esau's next step would be.

"Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city (Jonah 4:5)."I am waiting to see whether we will be able to eat in the Succah or if the rain will prevent us from fulfilling the Mitzvah.

It is impossible to read about the agreement to trade 1,000 terrorists for Gilad Shalit without waiting for he actual exchange to take place, waiting to see what these soon to be freed convicted killers will next do, and thinking about the Shalit family's five years of waiting for Gilad and his waiting for his freedom.

What does the Succah teach us about waiting?

Unlike the marriage Chuppah, which has a roof but no walls, the Succah has walls but an incomplete roof. The new couple experiences God's Presence and must now go out into the world and build their home. They are facing the world. The Succah, however, does not focus us out into the world, but, up, toward God. Yonah could not observe Nineveh from his succah; he had to exit to see, hence, the need for the Kikayon to provide shade when he was outside his Succah. He was too upset with God to wait for God's next step. When he stepped outside his succah to watch the dastardly city, and was overwhelmed by the heat, God miraculously provided for him.

Jacob built his succah, not to wait for Esau's next step, but for a hint from God as to Jacob's next step. He was waiting for Divine guidance.

We too "wait" in our Succah. We will address building the future outside he walls when we shake our Four Species out toward all directions. Our Succah sitting is to focus our attention up, toward Heaven, waiting for our response to God's Presence in our lives. There are gaps in the s'chach, aka Clouds, open spaces that represent the areas in our lives where we do not yet perceive God's Presence. We can stare at the open spaces and wait, but nothing will happen. The S'chach will not magically expand and cover the open spaces. Nothing is accomplished by our sitting and waiting for God to fill the gaps in our lives where we feel Him missing. Yes, we are waiting; waiting to see how we will choose to fill the gaps.

The "Four Species," when pointed up, can be our tools to actively fill the gaps we experience when looking up toward Heaven. We can accept responsibility to fill in all the gaps that still remain after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Perhaps then we will experience the same sense of freedom that Gilad will hopefully taste in the next few days.

A brief discussion about Sikh Religion

Posted in : Sikhism

(added few months ago!)

Sikh religion is ranked as the world’s fifth largest religion. Today Sikh religion has over 27 million followers worldwide, with the majority living in the Punjab district in what is now India and Pakistan. The number of Sikhs in UK is about 5,50,000. The word Sikhism is derived from one of the state in India i.e. Punjab.

Sikhism was founded by ‘Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’, the first guru of the Sikhs. Guru Nanak Dev was Hindu and Muslim followers and afterwards began to be called Sikhs (learners). They taught his followers to experience God within themselves, to have full faith in God, brought them from darkness into light. They opposed inequality, injustice, superstition in the society.

The tenth guru ‘Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’ installed ‘Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’. He declared that there would be no other living Guru after him. Guru Granth Sahib, a collection of Holy Scriptures, has teachings and writings of Guru Nanak Dev and other Gurus as well as Sikh, Hindu and Muslim saints. They provide unique and unequalled guidance and advice to the whole of the human race. They taught us the true value and meaning of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev taught his way of life in the form of songs and later on those words formed the beginnings of the Sikhs' sacred writings, later to become the "Shri Guru Granth Sahib".

Guru Nanak Dev spread the message EK ONKAR that means we are all one, created by the One Creator of all Creation. The meaning of each word of Mool Mantar:
Ek Onkar- There is only One God.
Sat Naam- Truth is his name.
Karta Purkh- He is the creator.
Nir Bhau- He is without fear.
Nir Vair- He is without hate.
Akaal Moorat- He is immortal, without form.
Ajooni- He is beyond birth and death.
Saibhang- He is self-illuminated.
Gur Prasad- He is realized by the kindness of the true Guru.

At the time of assigning name of new born baby, a man is given the name with ‘Singh’ that means lion, the woman is given the name with ‘Kaur’ that means Princess. Only through his/her name, a child can well recognize that he/she belongs to Sikh religion.

Sikh history has the several women who played a leading role in the events of their time and left their imprint on our history. The word Kaurageous is used for Sikh women unity. In the past, women were treated as inferior and man’s property. But Guru Nanak Dev through his preaching told the entire society that women were not slaves and they were worthy of praise and equal to men. They encouraged the freedom of speech and equal participation of women in worship, society, and on the battlefield. Women in Sikhism have played a glorious part in the history. The role of women in Sikhism is explained in Guru Granth Sahib. There is absolutely no discrimination against women. Now, Women are allowed to lead religious congregations and can even take part in recitation of the Holy Scriptures.

As being Sikhs, We all should be proud of our unique religion “Sikhism” that regard equality between men and women. We must learn and practice the teachings of equality which our Gurus taught us in Sikh religion.

Quran is the Unique Book

Posted in : Islam

(added few months ago!)

Nothing can be compared to the book known as the Quran. Millions have become Muslims upon simply hearing a verse from the Quran which no other book can be compared to it. Unfortunately, still the majority knows nothing of it.

The Quran is the Final Revelation from the Creator to humanity. It was revealed in 610 CE to the last Prophet Mohammad and completed over a period of 23 years. These 23 years of revelation resulted in a book which comprised of 114 chapters and some 6000 verses. This book is the message of your creator that serves as the primary source of regulation for the life of mankind.

In the west, when the Quran is mentioned, people turn away with disgust; this is primarily due to the negative exposure from the media. It has resulted in many non-Muslims not even wanting to hear the name of this amazing book.

If people were to truly reflect upon this book, they would realize that nothing in this world is quite the same. The following reasons will give an indication as to why this book deserves the attention of all humanity.

Preservation

The English critic of Islam, Sir William Muir wrote 200 years ago:" There is probably in the world no other book which has remained twelve centuries with so pure a text". As Muslims, we have a verse that was revealed more than 1400 years ago when ALLAH said "Indeed it is We who have sent down the Quran, and indeed it is Us who shall preserve it." (Surah 15:9)

These words have proved true to this very day. From the moment the first words were revealed to Mohammad, to this very day, every single letter and word of the Quran has remained unchanged.

Before Islam, all the revelations sent were not given this divine assurance. This is why we find that books like the Bible are riddled with interpolations and inaccuracies. It is well known that man has tampered with the Bible to the extent that annually different versions are produced to suit trends and desires. In fact this has been going on for so long that it is almost impossible to see what of the words of the Creator are left, if any.

With the Quran it is the exact opposite. The contents of this amazing book are stored in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide. Children, as young as 12, have memorized the entire book in its original language, Arabic. There is no other religious scripture on earth which is orally preserved in its original language by so many and over such a period of time, without having been tampered somewhere along the line. The Bible is a prime example of this. Many Christians believe that English is the divine language of the Bible. However Jesus spoke Aramaic. From Aramaic, his life-story was translated into Hebrew. From Hebrew it was translated into Greek. ; Then from Greek to Latin, and then finally from Latin to English.

There has not been a single vicar, priest or layman in recorded history that has even memorized the Bible in English, let alone the Aramaic. As Muslims we believe the Quran can only be in the language it was revealed in, i.e. Arabic. Anything else is a translation and not the divine words of the Creator.

The discovery of some ancient copies of the Quran from different places proves that there is not a single difference between what we have today and what was in existence 1,400 years ago. Thus Allah's promise holds true.

No Mistakes

Man as a creature is fallible. For this reason anything which is produced by him will naturally have faults. With the Quran, such a notion cannot even be considered as it is from the One Who is Infallible. In fact Allah clarifies this matter beautifully when he says: "Do they not consider the Quran? Had it been from other than Allah surely they would have found much discrepancies within it" (Surah 4:82)

Throughout history many have tried to scrutinize and search the Quran for mistakes and errors. To this day no one has been able to bring a shred of proof showing that this book is not from Allah. Some Christians have even called it the work of the Devil because the book affected them so much when they read it. With other scriptures, contradictions, mistakes and absurdities are constantly present.

The Arabic Language

Upon hearing the recited Quran, you may be rather affected. Besides hearing the reciter of the prayer, you often hear some people sobbing and crying. So what is it that makes these people affected so much? It is nothing more than the beauty and eloquence of this book that moves millions to tears. This beauty is expressed in the language of the Arabs.

Allah says: "Indeed We have revealed this as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand." (Surah 12:2)

At the time of the Prophet MOHAMMAD, three modes of expression were used. There was normal speech, the speech of the soothsayer and poetry. The Arabs were the masters of their language, and poetry was their cultural highlight. Arabic poetry is split into 16 categories, each separate from the other. When the Quran was proclaimed to the Arabs it amazed them beyond all limits. It was like nothing they had ever heard before. It did not fit into the 16 categories of poetry, nor was it the speech of a soothsayer, and it certainly was not normal speech. If it was not all these, then it could only be the word of Allah.

The eloquence and majesty of the early chapters of the Quran moved many to tears, and the beautiful Arabic Quran converted millions of Arabs in the Middle East. Not only did the Quran affect the lives of these Arabs, but it also transformed their culture. Even today, no serious study of the Arabic language is possible without reference to this book.

The reaction of some pagans was that they accused Muhammad (SAWS) of being a soothsayer and a madman. In order to silence them, Allah issued a challenge. At first he asked them to produce a book like the Quran. When it could not be done, Allah asked them to produce ten chapters like it. When this too could not be done Allah finally stated: "And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to Our slave, then produce a chapter like it" (Surah 2:23)

The smallest chapter in the Quran is only three verses long (Chapter 108). The pagans at the time of the Prophet MOHAMMAD could not even produce something as small as this, and since then no one else has completed this impossible task. All of this is in light of the fact that the Prophet Muhammad could not read or write, thus refuting those who say that the Quran was his own handiwork.

The Quran is the Final book of revelation. After it there will be no more. However, many have tried to deny this by producing their own new versions of the Quran. Among them have been the two false prophets, Musailima and Ghulam Ahmad. Many Chapters in the Quran are named after animals, such as the Ant, Spider etc. Musailima tried to copy this, and went about creating a chapter in his book called the Weasel. In Arabic it is called Al-Wabr and it hardly causes people to be struck in awe. On the other hand Ghulam Ahmed, the 'British stooge', claimed to receive revelation in cockney English. Such foolishness could never compare to the beauty of the Quran with its clear and beautiful Arabic language.

Science

Over the past few decades much interest has been shown in the scientific content of the Quran. Scientific data which has been discovered in recent times has been existent in this book for 1,400 years. In fact the very common origin of this universe is stated clearly by Allah, the Most High: "Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We parted them. And We made from water every living thing. Will they then not believe?" (Surah 21:30)

This parting of the heavens and the earth is more commonly known to scientists as the 'big bang'. It is also a fact that life originated from water and that every living cell is composed of 85% water. Without water life is impossible.

The mountains of the earth, like icebergs, have roots going deep into the ground. This ensures that they will not topple with their extreme heights - this is known as 'isostasy'. In this way the mountains are like the stakes which are used to anchor a tent. But this fact is already known to us when Allah says: "Have We not made the earth an expanse and the mountains stakes?" (Surah 78:6-7) and "Allah has cast into the ground mountains standing firm so that it does not shake with you" (Surah 31:10)

The embryological data which is found in the Quran is astounding. Allah describes the formation of a baby inside the womb from the very moment the sperm reaches the ovum, to its formation into a human. This data, which was only discovered about 30 years ago, has amazed many western scientists. Amongst them is Dr Keith Moore from the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Moore is a recognized authority in embryological circles, with his university textbook being set as a standard text in many universities throughout the world. When Dr Moore was asked as to how this information in the Quran could be explained, he replied: "It could only have been divinely revealed".

History

The Quran is a book of historical accuracy. One example of such an accuracy that has corrected the mistakes of many Christians and historians is the fate of the Pharaoh who drowned in the Red Sea whilst pursuing Moses. The Biblical story would have us believe that the matter ended when the Pharaoh drowned. But the Quran explains further. When he was drowning the Pharaoh confessed his faith in Allah. But it was too late, and Allah promised him: "This day We shall preserve you in your body, so that you may be a sign for those who come after you. But indeed many of mankind are heedless of Our signs" (Surah 10:92)

In 1898 the tombs of various pharaohs were discovered in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. In 1975 Dr Maurice Bucaille, an eminent French surgeon was allowed to examine the mummified bodies of Rameses II and the pharaoh who had pursued Moses - Merneptah. Dr Bucaille discovered that Merneptah had received very violent blows to several parts of his body and had suffered a massive heart attack. Amazingly, these are the results which occur when someone dies from drowning. Thus Allah had saved the body of the transgressing pharaoh as a sign for all humanity.

For those who say that Mohammad knew his history and wrote it in the Quran, the following shall prove otherwise. In the year 615CE the Roman army was defeated by the Persians. About this event Allah revealed: "The Romans have been defeated in the lowest land, but in a few years they shall be victorious again, within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after, is only with Allah." (Surah 30:24)

The words of Allah proved true as the Persians were defeated at the battle of Issus, 7 years later in 622CE. There is no possible way which Mohammad could have known (if he wrote the Quran) that the Romans would be victorious. In fact he also did not know that the 'lowest land' at which the battle was fought was literally that. The battle in 615CE was fought on the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point below sea level on earth, at 1,300ft.

A book with these credentials could only be from the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The best credit of the Quran is made by the Almighty Creator Who said "... which has been revealed to you (O' Muhammad) so that you may lead mankind out of the darkness and into the light" (Surah 14:1)

In short, The Quran is the unique book. Because: No other book can be entirely memorized by young children aged between 6-10 years but the Quran. You know why? Because Allah said five times in Surah 54:

And We have indeed made the Quran an easy book to understand

and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?"

No one on the earth can make any verse like that in the Quran.

When we read the Quran, even our skin becomes affected; you know why? Because Allah said (in Surah 39:23):

"Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful Message in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, (yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah's praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide".

We can recite any part or verse of the Quran many times in one setting and we feel something that we can not describe it. It is said that who tastes knows. When we read the Quran we know that we will get rewarded in the after life for each letter we recite it. No book on the earth has such criteria.

Sikhism & its Gurus

Posted in : Sikhism

(added few months ago!)

Sikhism was established by ten Gurus, teachers or masters, over the period from 1469 to 1708 - that is over a period of 239 years. These teachers were enlightened souls whose main purpose in life was the spiritual and moral well-being of the masses. By setting an exceptional example of how to live a holy and worthy life through the reciting of holy hymns called Shabads. The Gurus taught the people of India & beyond, to live spiritually fulfilling lives with dignity and honour. Each master added to and reinforced the message taught by the previous, resulting eventually to the creation of the religion that is now called Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev was the first Guru and Guru Gobind Singh the final Guru in human form. When Guru Gobind Singh left this world, he made the Sri Guru Granth Sahib the ultimate and final Sikh Guru. The Spirit of this final Guru is more than a holy book for the Sikhs, who give this eternal Guru the same respect and reverence as a living "human" Guru. During the span of 239 years, the Sikh Gurus laid down within the sacred scriptures, the rules and regulations that outline the way of living that was to be followed by all practising disciple of this religion. The history and the literature present the followers of the faith with the raw material required to learn about the beliefs and practises propagated by the Gurus. The Gurus were clear also to outline rituals, practises and beliefs that were not appropriate and were not to be followed by the faithful disciples.

1st Sikh Guru:- Guru Nanak Dev Ji - from 1469 to 1539 - ?. ???? ???? ??? ?? - ???? ??? ????
The first of the Gurus and the founder of the Sikh religion was Guru Nanak. He was born at Talwandi (now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan) on October 20, 1469. Guru ji mastered Punjabi, Sanskrit and Persian at an early age and in childhood revolted against ritualism, caste, prejudices, hypocrisy and idolatry. He regarded Hindus and Muslims as equals and referred to himself as neither Hindu nor Muslim but as a brother to all those who believed in God and truth. He made four great journeys, travelling to all parts of India, and into Arabia and Persia; visiting Mecca and Baghdad. He spoke before Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Parsees, and Muslims. He spoke in the temples and mosques, and at various pilgrimage sites. Wherever he went, Guru Nanak spoke out against empty religious rituals, pilgrimages, the caste system, the sacrifice of widows, of depending on books to learn the true religion, and of all the other tenets that were to define his teachings. Never did he ask his listeners to follow him. He asked the Muslims to be true Muslims and the Hindus to be true Hindus.

2nd Sikh Guru:- Guru Angad Dev Ji - from 1539 to 1552 - ?. ???? ???? ??? ?? - ???? ??? ????
He was born in 1504. Guru Angad invented and introduced the Gurmukhi (written form of Punjabi) script and made it known to all Sikhs. The scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is written in Gurmukhi. This scripture is also the basis of the Punjabi language. It became the script of the masses very soon. Guru Angad was a model of self-less service to his Sikhs and showed them the way to devotional prayers. He took great interest in the education of the children by opening many schools for their instruction and thus greatly increased literacy. For the youth he started the tradition of Mall Akhara, where physical as well as spiritual exercises were held. He collected the facts about Guru Nanak Sahib's life from Bhai Bala ji and wrote the first biography of Guru Nanak Sahib. (The Bhai Bale Wali Janamsakhi currently available is not the same as that which Guru Angad Sahib compiled.) He also wrote 63 Saloks (stanzas), these were included in Guru Granth Sahib. He popularized and expanded the institution of 'Guru ka Langar' started by Guru Nanak Sahib earlier.

3rd Sikh Guru:- Guru Amar Das Ji - from 1552 to 1574 - ?.???? ??? ??? ?? - ???? ??? ????
He was born in 1479. Guru Amardas took up cudgels of spirituality to fight against caste restrictions, caste prejudices and the curse of untouchability. He strengthened the tradition of the free kitchen, Guru Ka Langar (started by Guru Nanak), and made his disciples, whether rich or poor, whether high born or low born (according to the Hindu caste system), have their meals together sitting in one place. He thus established social equality amongst the people. Guru Amardas introduced the Anand Karaj marriage ceremony for the Sikhs, replacing the Hindu form.He also completely abolished amongst the Sikhs, the custom of Sati, in which a married woman was forced to burn herself to death in the funeral pyre of her husband. The custom of Paradah (Purda), in which a woman was required to cover her face with a veil, was also done away with.

4th Sikh Guru:- Guru Ram Das Ji - from 1574 to 1581 -  ?. ???? ??? ??? ?? - ???? ??? ????
He was born in 1534. Guru ji founded the city of Amritsar and started the construction of the famous Golden Temple at Amritsar, the holy city of the Sikhs. He requested the, Muslim Sufi, Mian Mir to lay the cornerstone of the Harmandir Sahib. The temple remains open on all sides and at all times to everyone. This indicates that the Sikhs believe in One God who has no partiality for any particular place, direction or time. The standard Sikh marriage ceremony known as the Anand Karaj is centered around the Lawan, a four stanza hymn composed by Guru Ram Das ji. The marriage couple circumscribe the Guru Granth Sahib ji as each stanza is read. The first round is the Divine consent for commencing the householders life through marriage. The second round states that the union of the couple has been brought about by God. In the third round the couple is described as the most fortunate as they have sung the praises of the Lord in the company of saints. In the fourth round the feeling of the couple that they have obtained their hearts desire and are being congratulated is described.

5th Sikh Guru:- Guru Arjan Dev Ji - from 1581 to 1606 -  ?. ???? ???? ??? ?? - ???? ??? ????
He was born in 1563. He was the third son of Guru Ram Das ji. Guru Arjan was a saint and scholar of the highest quality and repute. He compiled the Adi Granth, the scriptures of the Sikhs, and wrote the Sukhmani Sahib. To make it a universal teaching, Guru ji included in it hymns of Muslim saints as well those of low-caste pariah saints who were never permitted to enter various temples. Guru Arjan Dev completed construction of Sri Darbar Sahib also known as Golden Temple in Amritsar. Sri Darbar Sahib welcomes all without discrimination, which is symbolised by the four doors that are open in four directions. Guru ji became the first great martyr in Sikh history when Emperor Jahangir ordered his execution.

6th Sikh Guru:- Guru Har Gobind Ji - from 1606 to 1644
He was born in 1595. He was the son of Guru Arjan Dev and was known as a "soldier saint," Guru Hargobind ji organised a small army, explaining that extreme non-violence and pacifism would only encourage evil and so the principles of Miri-Piri were established. Guru ji taught that it was necessary to take up the sword in order to protect the weak and the oppressed. Guru ji was first of the Gurus to take up arms to defend the faith. At that time it was only emperors who were allowed to sit on a raised platform, called a takhat or throne. At the age of 13, Guru Hargobind erected Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, ten feet above the ground and adorned two swords, Miri and Piri, representing temporal and spiritual power.

7th Sikh Guru:- Guru Har Rai Ji - from 1644 to 1661
He was born in 1630, spent most of his life in devotional meditation and preaching the teachings of Guru Nanak. Although, Guru Har Rai Ji was a man of peace, he never disbanded the armed Sikh Warriors (Saint Soldiers), who earlier were maintained by his grandfather, Guru Hargobind. He always boosted the military spirit of the Sikhs, but he never himself indulged in any direct political and armed controversy with the Mughal Empire. Guru ji cautiously avoided conflict with Emperor Aurangzeb and devoted his efforts to missionary work. He also continued the grand task of nation building initiated by Guru Hargobind.

8th Sikh Guru:- Guru Har Krishan Ji - from 1661 to 1664
He was born in 1656. Guru Har Krishan was the youngest of the Gurus. Installed as Guru at the age of five, Guru ji astonished the Brahmin Pundits with his knowledge and spiritual powers. To the Sikhs he proved to be the very symbol of service, purity and truth. The Guru gave his life while serving and healing the epidemic-stricken people in Delhi. The young Guru began to attend the sufferers irrespective of cast and creed. Particularly, the local Muslim population was much impressed with the purely humanitarian deeds of the Guru Sahib and nicknamed him Bala Pir (child prophet). Even Aurangzeb did not try to disturb Guru Harkrishan Sahib sensing the sensitivity of the situation, but on the other hand never dismissed the claim of Ram Rai also. Anyone who invokes Guru Har Krishan with a pure heart has no difficulties whatsoever in their life.

9th Sikh Guru:- Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji -from 1665 to 1675
He was born in 1621 in Amritsar. He established the town of Anandpur. The Guru laid down his life for the protection of the Hindu religion, their Tilak (devotional forehead markings) and their sacred (janeau) thread. He was a firm believer in the right of people to the freedom of worship. It was for this cause that he faced martyrdom for the defence of the down-trodden Hindus. So pathetic was the torture of Guru Tegh Bahadur that his body had to be cremated clandestinely (a follower burned down his own home to cremate the Guru's body) at Delhi while his severed head was secretly taken four hundred kilometers away to Anandpur Sahib for cremation. Because of his refusal to convert to Islam a threatened forced conversion of the Hindus of Kashmir was thwarted.

10th Sikh Guru:- Guru Gobind Singh Ji - from 1675 to 1708
He was born in 1666 and became Guru after the martyrdom of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur. He created the Khalsa (The Pure Ones) in 1699, changing the Sikhs into a saint-soldier order with special symbols and sacraments for protecting themselves. After the Guru had administered Amrit to his Five Beloved Ones, he stood up in supplication and with folded hands, begged them to baptize him in the same way as he had baptized them. He himself became their disciple (Wonderful is Guru Gobind Singh, himself the Master and himself the disciple). The Five Beloved Ones were astonished at such a proposal, and represented their own unworthiness, and the greatness of the Guru, whom they deemed God's representative upon earth. He gave the Sikhs the name Singh (lion) or Kaur (princess). He fought many battles against the armies of Aurangzeb and his allies. After he had lost his father, his mother and four sons to Mughal tyranny, he wrote his famous letter (the zafarnama) to Aurangzeb, in which he indicted the Grand mughal with his treachery and godliness, after which the attacks against the Guru and his Sikhs were called off. Aurangzeb died soon after reading the letter. Soon, the rightful heir to the Mughal throne sought the Guru's assistance in winning his kingdom. It was the envie and fear of the growing friendship between the new Emperor and the Guru which lead to the sneak attack of the Pathan assasins of Wasir Khan who inflicted the wound which later caused the Guru's death. Thus the tree whose seed was planted by Guru Nanak, came to fruition when Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa, and on 3 October 1708, appointed Guru Granth Sahib as the Guru. He commanded: "Let all bow before my successor, Guru Granth. The Word is the Guru now."

Holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji - from 1708 to eternity

Guru Gobind Singh the tenth and last guru gave gur Gadhi to guru grath sahib ji which is the eternity guru for ever the sikhs.
Guru Granth Sahib (also known as the Adi Granth) is the scripture of the Sikhs. No Sikh ceremony is regarded as complete unless it is performed in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib. The Granth was written in Gurmukhi script and it contains the actual words and verses as uttered by the Sikh Gurus. It is considered the Supreme Spiritual Authority and Head of the Sikh religion, rather than any living person. It is also the only scripture of its kind which not only contains the works of its own religious founders but also the writings of people of other faiths. The living Guru of the Sikhs, the book is held in great reverence by Sikhs and treated with the utmost respect. Guru Granth Sahib is a book of Revelation. It conveys the Word of the Master through His messengers on earth. It is universal in its scope. The greatness of the Guru Granth Sahib lies not only in its being the Holy Scripture of the Sikhs but also in it being a general scripture available to mankind, intended for everybody, everywhere.

Judaism’s Central Sacrifice

Posted in : Judaism

(added few months ago!)

As co-founder and now a senior fellow of the Shalem Center, a leading Zionist think tank in Jerusalem, Yoram Hazony has sought a bridge between secular nationalism and Jewish religion. His latest book, The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture, claims to find it, in a naturalistic reading of the Hebrew Scriptures that allows the sacred texts of the Jewish people to do double duty: They can be read as revelation by the religious, Hazony argues, or by the secular as a guide to personal virtue and national prowess. The question is whether this shidduch between God’s word and natural law is a union of two besherts or a shotgun wedding that leaves both parties miserable.

Judaism’s Central Sacrifice

Hazony seems to think of Mosaic law as an afterthought to natural law—the former “is indeed held to be the key to a just and prosperous life” in the biblical narrative, but that is only because “it is so much in conformity with the natural law that even from the perspective of the shepherd, who examines its strictures from the outside, it can be accepted and obeyed.” Like the late political philosopher Leo Strauss, Hazony draws a bright line between faith and reason. But Hazony abhors Strauss because he is competing for the same side of the street. Faith, he argues, is for the Christians. His book, on the other hand, “is the first direct and sustained argument in favor of approaching the Hebrew Scriptures as works of reason.”

Hazony contends that an ethical philosophy founded in natural law is embedded in the Tanakh’s historical narrative, requiring no recourse to supernatural revelation. This stems from what he calls “shepherd’s ethics”—that is, “the vantage point of an outsider” who “owes nothing and has committed to nothing that cannot be reconsidered in light of one’s own independent judgment as to what is really right.” Inherent in the life the shepherd, he avers, is a virtue that distinguishes nomads from farmers and city-dwellers: Abel from Cain, the Abram of Ur from the nomad Abraham of Canaan, Joseph the shepherd from Joseph the minister of Pharaoh, and so on.

But it seems a stretch to hang the whole of Judaism on shepherd’s ethics. The people of Israel, to be sure, were shepherds before they took possession of the Promised Land, but they were farmers afterward, with three pilgrimage festivals associated with harvests and detailed laws for the use and ownership of land. One could as easily argue that the ascent to the land and the transition from herding to farming elevated the people of Israel. I Kings 4:25, after all, praises Solomon’s reign as a time when each man sat in peace under his own vine and fig tree, not among his own sheep and goats. The circumstances of shepherd life, moreover, do not always elicit good behavior, or we would not need the prohibition of Leviticus 18:23.

In April 2012, Hazony dumbfounded the observant Jewish world with an item in Commentary magazine portraying the late Rabbi Joseph Dov Soloveitchik as a naturalist who eschewed such basic tenets of Judaism as personal immortality, a claim that drew swift and sharp rejoinders from Orthodox writers. Rabbi Gil Student argued in the popular Hirhurim blog that Hazony “simply misreads” R. Soloveitchik, which is right: Soloveitchik argued that miracles could be understood within the framework of the “natural” world, but it is a natural world permeated with the divine.

In fact, this misreading of the Rav puts in context the monothematic insistence on naturalism in Hazony’s new volume. In contrast to Soloveitchik, Hazony starts with a long-superseded, deterministic vision of nature and then imposes a reductive, naturalistic reading on the Hebrew Scriptures. His case for pastoral ethics reflects extensive thought and research, to be sure. But his reading will surprise observant Jews, who read daily one segment part of the biblical narrative, the Binding of Isaac, or Akedah, which is often cited as the ultimate reproach to natural law. Kierkegaard observed that no philosophical system of ethics could explain Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son: “The fact is,” he wrote in Fear and Trembling, “the ethical expression for what Abraham did is that he wanted to murder Isaac. … If you simply remove faith as a nix and nought there remains only the raw fact that Abraham was willing to murder Isaac.”

Instead of the Akedah, Hazony’s understanding of Genesis centers on the story of Cain and Abel, which he believes fixes the archetype of farmer and herder. That is not a new idea. Leon Kass, the University of Chicago bioethicist and Pentateuch commentator, argued in 1996 that “Cain’s way of life, like the man himself, is more complex: possessive, artful, potentially harmful, and dangerous, but with the prospect of the higher achievements (and risks) of civilization. Abel’s way, like the man, is simple: open and permissive, harmless, and certainly vulnerable (especially before craft, cunning, and technique) and, besides, incapable of accomplishing much of anything.”

Why, then, is Cain’s sacrifice rejected? Because “God accepts the offering of a man who seeks to improve things, to make them good of himself and his own initiative. That is what God finds in Abel, and the reason he accepts his sacrifice.” There is a difficulty in this reading, though, pointed up in the commentary of Naftali Yehuda Berlin (known by the acronym Netziv), the head of the famed yeshiva at Volozhin during the late 19th century. Sheep and goats could not extract nourishment from the ground for human beings in the context of the Cain and Abel story, because, as the Netziv observed, human beings were still vegetarians at this point in the narrative: Not until Noah did humans consume meat. Farming therefore was the more important occupation. It sustained life, while herding contributed luxury goods. Cain’s work was in fact more important, so he held himself superior to his younger brother (whose Hebrew name “Hevel” literally means “fleeting”).

Cain’s contempt for Abel, not his role as a farmer, displeased God, the Netziv explained. Rabbi Shalom Carmy comments, “The first murderer, as the Netziv resurrects him from the text, is not a one-dimensional figure, wicked from the womb. He is a human being very much like us, possessed of a keen sense of what is fair and what is not, and quick to feel hurt and humiliation when his vision of himself and his position in relation to others is confounded.” Cain’s subsequent city-building, the Netziv adds, fulfills the opportunity that God has given him for redemption. Instead of a formulaic allegory of natural law, the Netziv reconstructs a human tragedy of pride and envy whose protagonist is noble but flawed.
